In 1822, the society established on the west coast of Africa a colony named Liberia, a name proposed by Robert Goodloe Harper, an American politician and member of the society. Liberia’s capital was named Monrovia, in honor of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, and a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia.
