In 1747, the British Linen Company issued promissory notes to pay agents, weavers, manufacturers, and other customers. In 1750, the company began issuing true banknotes payable on demand, and continued to do so until 1905. By mid-1770s, the company had completely transitioned from linen to banking. In 1813, it received a new royal charter. “P” preceding a signature title stands for “pro,” meaning the signatory is acting on behalf of the actual official who holds that title.
