About Trans-Dniester
or earlier issues, see Russia. Trans-Dniester—also known as Transnistria, Transdniestria, and Pridnestrovie—is a disputed region in southeastern Europe. Since its declaration of independence on 2 September 1990, it has been governed by the unrecognized Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublica (PMR), which claims the left bank of the river Dniester and the city of Bendery within the former Moldavian SSR. The modern Republic of Moldova did not recognize the secession, leading to a brief war in 1992. Although a cease-fire agreement has held since then, the territory’s political status remains unresolved: de jure part of Moldova, Trans-Dniester is de facto independent. It is organized as a presidential republic, with its own government, parliament, military, police, postal system, and currency. Its authorities have adopted a constitution, flag, national anthem, and a coat of arms.
