Values / World Currency / Portuguese India

On 20 May 1498, Vasco da Gama became the first Portuguese explorer to reach the Indian subcontinent at Calicut on the Malabar Coast, and in 1505 Portuguese India was established with its capital in Kochi (also known as Cochin). In 1510, Goa was captured by Afonso Albuquerque and became the capital. In 1843, Nova Goa (New Goa) officially replaced Goa (Old Goa as of the 1960s) as the capital. Nova Goa was officially renamed Panaji (Panjim in English: land that never floods) in the 1960s as part of an effort to erase Portuguese colonial influence from India.
