Spain. New Silver and Colour Proof Coins Honour Spanish Winter Olympic Team, 2026
The FNMT – Casa Real de la Moneda release silver collector coins featuring the national Winter Olympic Team.
Commencing from the 6th February and concluding on the 22nd February next year, more than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries will be competing for 195 medals in 16 Olympic disciplines and six Paralympic sports. The XXV Winter Olympiad will be the fourth Olympic Games hosted in Italy, which previously hosted in 1956, the 1960 XVII Summer Olympiad in Rome and in 2006. The XXV Winter Olympic Games will mark the 20th anniversary of the XX Winter Olympics in Turin, as well as the 70th anniversary of the VII Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. This also marks the first time that Milan will host the Olympic Games. The joint bid from the two cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo beat another joint bid from Swedish cities Stockholm and Åre at the 134th Session of the International Olympic Committee who met in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the 24th June 2019.
Spain’s Winter Olympic team last competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China which consisted of ten men and four women competing in six sports. It was snowboarder Queralt Castellet and skeleton athlete Ander Mirambell who were named as the Spanish flag-bearers during the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, figure skater Adrián Díaz served as the country's flag-bearer during the closing ceremony.
The reverse side features a snowboarder in action, surrounded by elements that evoke winter and snow, including snowflakes, an ice rink, and a grain motif reminiscent of snow. To the upper left of the snowboarder is the Winter Olympic team logo. Both the logo and snowboarder are highlighted with vivid colour applied to the raised relief. To the right of the snowboarder is the coins’ denomination of 10 EURO. The inscription EQUIPO OLÍMPICO ESPAÑOL 2026 (Spanish Olympic Team 2026) is placed along the lower rim off-centre beneath the primary design. The mintmark of the Casa Real de la Moneda, a crowned M is placed to the lower left just under the snowboarder. The obverse includes an effigy of HM King Felipe VI created by FNMT engraver Luis Jose Diaz Salas. The legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPANA is placed along the upper rim of the coin and the year of issue 2025 is placed just below the King’s likeness.
