The coins innovatively focus on the unique and awe-inspiring wildlife prevalent in the country. Borrowing from the phrase which once referenced to the animals which were prized as trophies during hunting expeditions, these majestic animals are now eagerly sought after during safaris and only as photo souvenirs. Following on the footsteps of the last two series which featured an innovative depiction of these five species, this sequel to the award-winning numismatic range which was introduced in 2019 continues with the elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, cougar and lion. Each is regarded as emblems and ambassadors of this culturally rich country representing African wildlife.

Launching the latest series is the African elephant or, Loxodonta Africana, the largest and most impressive representative of the African animal kingdom and regarded as a symbol of power and strength. Regarded as ‘gentle giants’, they are characterised by an excellent memory and very distinct social behaviours. In the wild, elephants can live up to 60 years as they have no natural predators with the exception of poachers – their threat remains high despite stringent laws in place to protect the herds.

The most noticeable change from each series design is in the depiction of each animal found on the obverse. The new series features each fully grown animal in an environmental setting. The obverse side of the first series III coin highlights an elephant as he stands on a grassy mound, in a stance which suggests he is about to charge and defend his territory. Towards the lower half is an image of the South African Crest centred and on either side is the text SOUTH AFRICA and BIG FIVE 2024. The award-winning reverse design which is a collaboration of the team of artists at the South African Mint remains the same as that of the previous two series, perfectly joining the two halves of the animal’s face from an opposite format. When two coins are placed next to one another; they make up the full face of the animal. In the centre are the coins’ metal content, denomination and weight in a circular emblem.
