San Marino. Second Year of Popular Peregrine Series Silver Bullion Coin Released
The Philatelic and Numismatics Division of San Marino release 2025-dated Peregrine bullion coins.
The popular one-ounce silver coins from the smallest Republic in Europe have successfully launched a bullion-related product that sold out in a matter of weeks from their initial release. San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco, but they have an impressive catalogue of collector and circulation coins since their first modern national coinage was produced and released in 1864. Sammarinese coinage was produced in denominations and specifications which were the same as Italian coinage and denominated as the Sammarinese Lire and both currencies were interchangeable at an equal value. With the entry of Italy into the Euro-zone from 2002, coins of San Marino were also denominated in Euro although the country is not a member-state of the Euro-zone.
The subject of the Peregrine falcon of this new annual series was chosen as these raptors are native to San Marino and make their nests in niches in the cliffs near San Marion’s First Tower on the summit of Mount Titano.
The silver coins are produced by the Austrian Mint at their facilities in Vienna on behalf of the State Treasury - Banca Centrale della Repubblica di San Marino. The obverse side of the coin is created by Helmut Andexlinger, senior engraver at the Austrian Mint. The design depicts a Peregrine falcon perched on a branch, looking over its shoulder. The inscription PEREGRINE FALCON is shown along the upper left rim with the additional text SAN MARINO and the year 2025 placed along the top and right rim. The coins’ specifications and denomination 1 OZ · Ag 999 · 5 EURO are shown along the lower left rim. The reverse side depicts the image of the official coat of arms of the Republic of San Marino designed by Antonella Napolione. The crest which illustrates three towers topped with feathers on a mountain within a crowned shield is believed to have been first used in the fourteenth century and is featured on the national flag. The text REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO encircles the crest.
