Perhaps among the most recognisable of Australia’s distinctive native animals, the Mint’s Koala series debuted just last year which also included the memorial effigy of the Late Queen Elizabeth II. Koalas are one of the country’s unique animals found dwelling only in the southeast and eastern parts of the Australian continent. Koalas are in fact marsupials and were only referred to as a bear before zoologists were able to accurately classify the distinct species. During the 19th and early 20th centuries koalas were hunted for skins for export which led to a population decline, prompting Australia’s first large-scale environmental response. Once ranked as a species of least concern in terms of their numbers, Koalas are now classed as vulnerable and are fully protected under Australian environmental law. Each year the reverse design depicts a different scene and koala image and for 2025, the design beautifully captures the essence of Australia's beloved wildlife, featuring two koalas, a mother and her ‘joey’, nestled on a eucalyptus tree. The term ‘joey’ is also used to describe the offspring of other marsupials, such as kangaroos, wombats, and possums. This charming depiction not only highlights the close bond between the koalas but also showcases their natural habitat, the iconic eucalyptus forests. Designed by the Mint's Adam Ball, the coin brings the Australian outback to life with intricate details of eucalyptus leaves and gum nut patterns that enrich the background. Below the primary design in a horizontal direction is the text KOALA along with the specifications of the gold 1 oz .9999 Au and silver 1 oz .999 Ag coin. The obverse side includes the Commonwealth effigy of HM King Charles III created by engraver Dan Thorne. The legend surrounding the portrait reads as CHARLES III · AUSTRALIA 2025. The denomination 100 DOLLARS (gold) or 1 DOLLAR (silver) is placed just under the King’s likeness.
