Aruba: New Proof Silver And Colour Coins Features Local Aquatic Life, Cabay Di Awa
The Central Bank of Aruba release new silver proof and colour coins continuing a theme of indigenous aquatic and land wildlife.
The series began in 2017 and has included many unique and beautiful depictions of wildlife found on this small Caribbean island. Aruba is known to have very unusual flora & fauna and for 2024, it’s the turn of the seahorse which is one of the absolute Aruban attractions for lovers of diving and snorkeling. Better known as Cabay di Awa the word for seahorse in the Papiamento language, widely spoken in the Dutch Antilles, these aquatic wonders are abundant in the waters around Aruba who mainly live off small crustaceans and plankton. As they are known to be somewhat reluctant to be spotted by snorklers, they can be difficult to spot a seahorse in the water since they are very adept at hiding among the coral or near the soft or rocky sea-beds. Aruba has several species of seahorses in various colours and sizes ranging from the largest seahorse at 19 centimetres to the smallest which are no bigger than the nail of a small child.
The coins are produced by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands and on behalf of the Central Bank of Aruba. The obverse side depicts a lone seahorse hovering just above the seabed among small polyps of coral. Above the primary design which includes applied colour is the text ARUBA and below, along the lower rim is CABAY DI AWA. The reverse side features the official Aruban crest centred along with miniature national flag depicted in full colour shown to the left of the crest and the representation of the Dutch crown placed to the right. The text ARUBA 2024 and 5 FLORIN is placed along the right rim. The edge of the coin includes incused lettering in Papiamento which reads DIOS * TA * CU * NOS * (God be with us)
